There are two common types of  headaches with or without neck pain that accounts for over 90% of all headaches. These headaches are not attributed to any underlying disease process that may pose a serious threat to a patient’s health. These headaches include:

  • Tension/Cervicogenic (originating from the neck)
  • Migraine

Treatment at The Gilbert Clinic can be very effective for this condition and does not include medicine, shots, or surgery and will allow for natural relief of symptoms.

Tension/Cervicogenic (originating from the neck)

These types of headaches occur when joints and/or muscles are dysfunctional in the neck. This can cause pain in the head from a variety of sources: direct compression of nerves in the neck, referred pain into the head from tight muscles, referred pain into the head from joints in the neck that are not moving properly. A physical examination can determined if this is the cause of your headache. Once diagnosed, comprehensive treatment to eliminate the cause of the pain can yield highly successful outcomes.

Migraine

A migraine usually is a throbbing headache that occurs on one or both sides of the head. The headache typically is accompanied by nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite. Activity, bright light or loud noises can make the headache worse, so someone having a migraine often seeks out a cool, dark, quiet place. Migraines can be triggered by certain activities, foods, smells or emotions. Some people are more likely to experience migraines when they are under stress, while others develop migraines when stress is relieved.

Subluxations at the base of the skull and the neck have been known to contribute, to the formation of migraine headaches. Subluxations are dysfunctional areas of the spine that involve both the joint and the muscles adjoining the small bones of the upper spinal column. Many times on an x-ray, the bones appear to be in the correct place and many professionals often miss the tension in the muscles, while a chiropractor is well trained to detect these abnormalities.

Chiropractic care is a safe, non-invasive way to reduce these subluxations and relieve migraine symptoms without the use of medication. This approach may be particularly useful for patients who cannot use prescription medication due to other risk factors.

Our comprehensive treatment is very effective for controlling symptoms of migraines and reducing their frequency.
